NOTICE: Major cross-border exercise to close railway and bike trail on 24 August

The “Schöna 2019” disaster training exercise will take place on Saturday, 24 August. The area north of the Czech-German border between Gelobtbachmühle and Prossen harbor will experience closures of local roads and footpaths. Intercity transportation, including international rail travel, will also be disrupted.

Transportation disruptions:
  • Beginning at 4:30 pm the railway between Bad Schandau and Schöna will be closed in both directions. During the closure neither international nor local trains will operate on this segment. Local trains on the German side will end at Bad Schandau. The railway closure will last approximately 24 hours.
  • The Elbe Cycle Route along the left bank of the river will be closed for all cyclists beginning at 3:30 pm for 24 hours between Schöna station and the bridge at Krippenbach. The cycle route closure applies to all other recreational use as well, including inline skating. Note: the planned detour is over difficult terrain, as it must leave the valley.
  • On the right bank of the Elbe on route B172 between the defunct border crossing station at Schmilka and Prossen, travel closures will apply for personal automobiles due to the large number of emergency vehicles moving in the area and rescue vehicles transporting the “wounded” to area hospitals.

Hiking trail closures:

Between Gelobtbachmühle (Czech border) and the edge of Krippen, hiking trails will be closed in the direction of Reinhardtsdorf and Schöna to the Elbe Cycle Route. In particular, the Hirschgrundweg trail will be affected.

Parking restrictions:
  • Use of parking lots in the area will be limited as these will provide a base for rescue services and areas for treating the wounded.
  • Parking lots that will be restricted include all public parking lots in Schmilka, the lot at the end of Holzlagerplatzweg on B172, the Waldbadstraße lot in Reinhardtsdorf, and the former bus station Wismut in the Leupoldishain industrial zone.
  • Parking lot restrictions will apply from the afternoon of 23 August until the morning of 25 August.

The primary purpose of this training exercise is to practice cooperation among fire departments, emergency services, and disaster units in the larger region and between regions. Major events often require the participation of other organizations and institutions, such as law enforcement, hospitals, private companies providing basic infrastructure, the military, and local authorities.

More information about the exercise is available online at sachsen.de.
