Rose Garden gloriette to be renovated

Visitors to the castle rose garden will have to skip the garden’s gloriette. The ornamental terrace is in dangerous disrepair and has been closed due to safety concerns.

Long-term monitoring of the multi-level pavilion has shown that the state of the entire structure has been quickly deteriorating, making it necessary to close it and set up temporary wooden supports. The city plans the gloriette’s renovation as soon as possible. The cost is estimated at 16.6 million Czech crowns. Restoration work on the statuary ornamenting the structure will cost the city 4.2 million.

In the 1670s, Maximilian Thun established the castle’s ornate garden in the Italian style on the northern part of the bluff. It features elegant garden landscaping and statuary. The grand, multi-tiered gloriette with its monumental stairway lies at one end and conceals the entrance to a covered passage connecting the rose garden with the Church of the Cross below. The gloriette and the rose garden are excellent examples of early Baroque architecture. The gloriette itself is a striking part of Decin’s cityscape and a landmark of incalculable value.
