Tourist season launches in style

The tourist season gets off to its official start this April, a full month before the town festival in May. On Saturday, April 13, the riverbank will be the scene of a full day of contests, music, and sporting activities. The musical program includes Los Pelotudos, Tomas Kostka, and Iva Sulcova. Another special guest this year is YouTuber Tary.

Elbe Amphibians

One of the day’s biggest draws will be the Labsky obojzivelnik (“Elbe amphibian”) competition. Teams hop aboard a canoe or raft below the castle, tackle the river to Dolni Zleb, and then return to Decin as fast as they can along the Elbe bike trail on a bike or push scooter. Everyone gets a “bitter reward” at the finish line.

Registration is on the riverbank from 10:00 to 10:45 am. The race begins at 11:00 am. Turn over bikes and scooters at registration, marked with your name.

The race is divided into the following categories:

(K) Canoe/scooter, 2 people in the canoe, total 10 teams

(R) Raft/bike, 4 to 6 people in a raft, total 8 teams

How will the race look? From Decin to Dolni Zleb teams navigate the river on their category’s watercraft. On the left bank at Dolni Zleb by the ferry dock they pick up their scooters or bikes. This segment is 8.5 km.

Then they return by scooter or bike along the left bank of the Elbe on the bike trail from Dolni Zleb to Decin, cross Tyrs Bridge, then turn left, crossing the road and going down by the library, passing back under the bridge and to the finish line on the riverbank below the castle.

The race takes place under normal traffic conditions. Every participant must wear a helmet.

Registration costs 300 CZK per team in the canoe/scooter category and 600 CZK per team for raft/bike. Bike rental is 100 CZK including helmet. Bikes and scooters will be transferred to Dolni Zleb to await the team’s arrival.

There’s plenty to fight for. The team that wins each category receives a keg of Decin’s local beer, Kapitan. And all participants get a cold pint at the finish line.

Registration by email info@active-point.cz or phone +420 724 006 865.

Volkswagen Run

This footrace is open to all comers. More than one hundred participants are expected and registration is open online at konkordia-decin.cz. Online registrants receive a gift bag from the sponsor. Winners receive attractive prizes.

“In the first year there were 76 participants, last year 94,” say the organizers, noting that in its first two years the race made a good name for itself and had a great atmosphere. The race is short, but demanding, and attracts top runners from the Usti region.

Registration is free. The race starts on Smetanovo nabrezi at 1:45 pm. It is a total of 6 km in three laps of 2 km each — Krizova ulice, Decin Castle, Marian meadow, and the Elbe trail. Participants race in four categories: Men 49 and under, men 50 and over, women 39 and under, women 40 and over.

Group Hike

Another part of the season launch is a day trip. Hikers follow the green trail from Dolni Zleb to Klopot, along the German part of the Klopot gorge and then around Ziskaquele below Großer Zschirnstein, cross Ceska Brana back into Bohemia, on to the U Buku crossroad, on the yellow trail through the Dolni Zleb valley to Dolni Zleb. The route measures 11.5 km. Those who don’t want to tackle the whole thing can opt to walk only from Dolni Zleb to Klopot lake and back, roughly 5 km.

A train will take hikers from Decin-Priper station at 10:43 am. Return trains leave Dolni Zleb at 3:02 pm and 5:02 pm.

Auto Horejsek Road Show

Auto Horejsek Road Show is an exciting part of the season launch. The road show will be hosted by popular Czech YouTuber Tary, who will demonstrate some of his parkour tricks.

“Instead of a classic podium, we’ll have a big American semi. We’ve prepared a lot of entertainment and contests for the kids, which we hope will teach them something about health and traffic rules. Come out with your whole family to try changing a tire, completing a slalom with drunk-driving goggles, or resuscitating a car crash victim,” say the organizers.

Visitors will also have a chance to look over the new Skoda and Volkswagen models. And the cherry on the cake is a chance to win a gift certificate at CCS gas stations worth 10,000 CZK. More information is available on www.autohorejsekroadshow.cz.

Unlocking the Elbe trail

April 13th marks the start of the tourist season not only in Decin, but in Litomerice and Usti nad Labem as well. Anyone who visits all three towns on that day and has their picture taken in the official photo corner is eligible to receive a gift pack from the three towns. Submit photos on the Facebook page for “Labska stezka v UK” (the Elbe trail in the Usti region).

Tip: If you’re on your bike, you can leave Litomerice at 10:00 am when the official “Unlocking the Elbe trail” ride begins. A bus will take you to Litomerice from Decin for free. It departs from Kocanda at 8:30 am. Reserve your spot at rezervace.ceskestredohori.info.

Lecture and Discussion

At 2:00 pm in the municipal library there will be a lecture on the topic “The world’s first descent from Karl Marx Peak.” Libor Dusek and Zdenek Jirous experienced a crazy ride in Tajikistan. From the seven-thousand-meter summit of Karl Marx Peak, they skied down to below the third altitude camp (5,500 m). No one else has ever done anything like it.

“It was beautiful, but tough,” says Libor Dusek. The pair received honorable mention from the Czech Mountaineering Association for their feat.
