Town Festival Promises to Entertain

Decin’s Mestske Slavnosti town festival starts on May 10, 2019.

Another year has come and gone and Decin is looking forward to its biggest event, the town festival. This year the festivities will take place to the legendary score of Star Wars, for which composer John Williams earned an Oscar. Decin’s fireworks display will feature five pieces from Williams’ work, including Princess Leia’s Theme and the ominous Imperial Theme. “The fireworks are orchestrated around the music, with its constant changes of tempo and atmosphere, with the aim of blending, enhancing, and adding new dimensions,” states Jaroslav Stolba of Flash Barrandov Special Effects, which is providing the display this year. The fireworks begin at 10:00 pm.

Friday is also the start of LabeFest, a two-day music festival featuring a diverse mix of performers. On Friday the line-up includes the band Vypsana Fixa and the popular Slovak group No Name. The riverbank venue opens at 6:00 pm. The festival begins at 7:00 pm. First on the podium is Talent. On Saturday the music continues with Sabina Krovakova and the Czech mega-group Olympic. The music festival is not, however, the only thing people have to look forward to on the first weekend of festivities. The whole family can head to Marian meadow for a fun day of contests and activities, the wood carving festival, and the Adrenalin Challenge. If you can find the courage, come ride the zip-line across the Elbe canyon. This popular event has its own accompanying program, with world record-holder Danny Mensik walking the longest high-line in the Czech Republic.

The big event of the second weekend of the festival is, without a doubt, Historicky trh majovy—the Historic May Fair—with stalls of traditional crafts, food and drink, and a diverse cultural program in the castle courtyard. The fair lasts two days, Saturday and Sunday. Also at the castle is the Decinska Kotva florist competition. For basketball fans, there’s a street ball tournament in the parking lot by the library. In its 24th year, the tournament welcomes hundreds of teams from across the country. Another popular part of the festival is the Mlade Labe showcase, which gives youth programs in the city a chance to put their best face forward. But that’s not all. The town festival also includes a vintage car show with an “easy ride” through town on the 18th. The space in front of the Church of the Cross makes room for the biggest rosé wine tasting in the country. And on May 19th, seniors are the focus, with concerts on the riverbank.

On the final weekend there’s a street theater festival. Admission is free of charge. The town festival closes with a day of games on May 26th. Kids can jump their hearts out in a bouncy castle, get their faces painted, ride a pony, and play games. Admission is free.
