Synagogue

The Děčín synagogue stands on the road from Podmokel to Shepherd's Wall. It was built by the Podmokel Jewish community in 1906-1907 in a pseudo-Oriental style with distinctive Art Nouveau elements. Fortunately, it escaped the fate that befell a large number of synagogues in Bohemia, especially in the former Sudetenland.

Devoid of all religious symbols, it was first used as a Wehrmacht warehouse during the occupation, from 1941 as a Hitler Youth air model factory and then again as a military warehouse. The Jewish community received the synagogue back in 1994 as a gift from the District National Committee. The synagogue was already in a very deteriorated state. Virtually all the furnishings had disappeared from the interior during the turbulent times, including, unfortunately, the most important thing - the Torah. The only thing that remained were the bare walls.

However, thanks to the careful care of the Jewish Community of Děčín and other helpful entities, it underwent a demanding reconstruction that restored its dignity and charm. Today it is one of the important centres of cultural and social events in the city. More on the website of the Jewish Community of Děčín.
