Kamchatka bears Bruno and Irina from the Děčín Zoo are awake again.
After a three-month hibernation, Kamchatka bears in Zoo Děčín were rediscovered in the outdoor enclosure. The pair went into hibernation at the beginning of December.
For the female Irina, hibernation was a normal part of her regime, but the male Bruno was still getting used to longer hibernation - in the past he had only slept lightly and was used to regular food intake. With the arrival of Irina, however, the breeders decided to unify their winter regime.
Bruno was the first to wake up, symbolically on 29 January - the day of his tenth birthday. But because of the cold weather, he didn't want to go out yet. During February, the keepers gradually started to feed the bears - first with small doses once a week, then every other day, and now they receive food every day. The gradual increase in feeding is important for their bodies to get used to a normal regime again after hibernation.
The first moments together after the winter were very lively. Irina needed to stretch her body after a long rest, so she gave Bruno a good run in the paddock. There were also small fights and loud speeches of both animals.
If the weather stays sunny, visitors can regularly watch the bears in the outdoor enclosure again. The zoo has been open daily from 8 am to 6 pm since 1 March.
