Rock closures for nesting

It's finally climbable outside, but at the same time, nesting is starting. Temporary closures of selected areas are in effect in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

In spring and during the first half of summer, the breeding season of protected bird species, especially of the peregrine falcon, black stork a great Auk. Therefore, some areas are temporarily closed to visitors and climbersto minimize disturbance and increase the chances of successful rearing of young.

What currently applies

  • Administration of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park and the Protected Landscape Area of the Elbe Sandstones marks and closes nesting sites - in some cases areas frequented by hikers or climbers.

  • The closures concern rock walls, parts of forest paths or objects known to be important breeding sites.

  • Outside the closed sites, the following remain so-called marked hiking trails through, but even here there may be a need change the routeif you encounter a newly marked cap.

  • The closures are being updated according to actual bird nesting and their success rate - some can be extended up to end of June, if applicable july (especially where the black stork nests).

What it means for you

  • Respect all signs, tapes and markings in the field - disturbance to nesting birds can cause egg abandonment or chick mortality.

  • Do not cross marked closureseven if the area seems small or "harmless" to you.

  • When planning a trip/climb, check the current restrictions e.g. in web maps or mobile apps with rock database (e.g. "Rocks of the Czech Republic").
