Alternate activities away from Hrensko

With a forest fire raging in Bohemian Switzerland National Park (and across the border in Saxon Switzerland too), we recommend that you avoid the area around Hrensko, Mezna, and Mezni Louka.

Current information (July 26) about road closings in the area:

The following roads are closed:

  • Decin to Hrensko and across the Czech-German border all the way to Bad Schandau
  • Between Hrensko and Mezni Louka to Mezna
  • Between Janov and Hrensko
  • Between Vysoka Lipa and Mezni Louka
  • The road to Jetrichovice is open to passenger cars as of this writing

Visitors are requested to avoid the area around Hrensko, Mezni Louka, Vysoka Lipa, and Janov to make way for emergency vehicles. This area is most affected. Several buildings in Mezna have been damaged by the fire.

Cyclists

If you had been planning a cycling trip in this area we recommend you try a different route instead. Some alternatives:

  • Bike route 15 along the Ploucnice River to Benesov nad Ploucnici, where you can visit the chateau or the Ostry castle ruins.
  • Ore Mountains bike trail over Decinsky Sneznik. The bike bus from Decin will take you there too.
  • Elbe Bike Route 2 heading upstream on the right bank, towards Usti nad Labem, Litomerice, and bike trails in the Central Bohemian Uplands. (We recommend you avoid the segment on the left bank towards Dolni Zleb and the border because there is thick smoke and ash.)

Observation points and panoramas

We recommend you avoid the viewpoints in the area around the forest fire. Janov observation tower is CLOSED until further notice.

Some safe alternatives:

  • Decinsky Sneznik
  • Chlum
  • Sokoli vrch
  • Jedlova
  • Quaderberg
  • Shepherd's Bluff (Pastyrska stena)
  • Dymnik (near Rumburk)
  • Tanecnice (Mikulasovice)
  • Zlaty vrch
  • Studenec (Ceska Kamenice)

And in the Central Bohemian Uplands there are more than twenty summits to climb, including Milesovka, Rip, Lovos, and more.

Boat outings

The Elbe River is CLOSED to ALL water traffic between Decin and the German border. Firefighters are using this segment of the river to collect water to release on the fire. This restriction applies to absolutely all watercraft, including paddleboards, rafts, and other small craft. All cruises with destinations downstream from Decin are cancelled (e.g. to Hrensko, Bad Schandau, Dresden).

For a nice boat trip with the kids try the T91 line (Usti nad Labem – Litomerice – Roudnice nad Labem – Melnik). You can get to Usti nad Labem from Decin in about 20 minutes by train or by car as well as by bike. See the route map and boat timetable.

Hiking

Avoid the area around Hrensko, Mezni Louka, Mezna, Vysoka Lipa, and Janov. The situation is worst there and emergency vehicles are operating in the area. Also avoid the Kyjov valley area, as it is full of ash.

We recommend visiting an area as far as possible from the area affected by the blaze. There are nice hikes around Tisa, Ostrov, Decinsky Sneznik, the Sluknov Spur, Ceska Kamenice, and Krasna Lipa.
