Hrebenovka ridge-top trail through Bohemian Switzerland now open

The mountain ridge trail (“Hrebenovka”) that takes hikers across Bohemian Switzerland is nothing new. Work on the original version of this trail, known then as the Blue Ridge Trail was begun at the beginning of the twentieth century by the Northernmost Bohemia Society. With time it was extended both to the east and west until between the world wars it led from Blankenstein all the way across the Ore Mountains, Bohemian Switzerland, the Jizera Mountains, Giant Mountains, and Orlik Mountains, over Praded in the Jesenik Mountains, all the way to Krnov, a distance of about 800 km. In the region of Bohemian Switzerland, the original trail took the shortest possible route between points, but missed a number of interesting natural and cultural landmarks. That is one of the reasons that the current route differs from its historical predecessor.

The newly marked ridge-top trail measures 100 km, starting in Tisa and terminating at the Stozecky pass. It was planned to follow a route with a primarily natural trail surface, avoiding roadways and cycling trails when at all possible. The trail visits a number of popular tourist destination as well as some lesser known spots. Hikers can take it in stages, depending upon how long they want to walk at once. A recommended itinerary for tackling the trail’s full length divides it into six stages, with the shortest measuring 11 km. More information about the trail is available online at www.hrebenovka.com.
